Legible Light

Scaffolding – Masonic Street, San Francisco

Subjects lit by full sun–even early sun, as here–are not my favorite.  The exception is when shadows add complexity. Someday, I am going to do a whole series focused on scaffolding.

Dead Datsun – Healdsburg

Posted in Photos by William Poole on June 12, 2008

My friends and I were walking from dinner back to where we were staying, when those in the front called out to me not to miss the truck, knowing it would appeal.  I made several images on the spot, then returned to make more on my 6 a.m. walk the next day. This one–my favorite–comes from the second set.

Rear steps – Healdsburg, CA

Posted in Photos by William Poole on June 11, 2008

Spent last weekend in this town in the Sonoma wine country.  Many historic homes surrounding downtown.  This one was showing some wear–one of the things I like best in a house.  Why?  If I could tell you that adequately, I might not have photograph them. Used a tilt-shift lens to bring both the tree and the doorway into focus.

Hobart Building

Posted in Photos by William Poole on June 9, 2008

Walking a different route to work last week, I caught the light reflected from one of our modern skyscrapers onto the face of architect Willis Polk’s 1914 Hobart Building.  The next day, I took the same route, and brought a camera.

Friday evening – Corbett Street

Some homes I have photographed many times, just because they please my eye.  And of course they change–for example the new pavement here.

Camellias and wall – Filoli Garden

Located 45 minutes or so south of San Francisco, Filoli is a historic mansion surrounded by acres of formal gardens.  This image comes from last April.  We try to visit around Easter each year, when the camellias and rhododendrons are spread  with bloom and the grounds are thick with potted tulips.  Photographers be warned: no tripods allowed except during special evening hours on select days.  Is there any photographic subject as hackneyed as the flower?  So hard to capture a fresh view.  But I keep trying.

Nature outside the window

Posted in Photos by William Poole on June 1, 2008

For fifteen years after we came to San Francisco, we lived in an apartment with a sliding glass door opening from the living room onto a fire escape and large evergreen tree.  Ours was a redwood, this is a pine. Still, this scene struck a chord with me.  Image made on States Street, one of the many routes I take from my home took the Castro District.
